Flexi hoses (also called flexible braided hoses) are short, flexible pipes covered with a woven stainless steel braid.
They’re used to connect water supply lines to fixtures like: Taps, Toilets, Dishwashers, Washing machines
They’re popular because they’re cheap, easy to install, and can bend around tight spaces where rigid pipes can’t bend. Inside the braid is usually a rubber or plastic tube that actually carries the water.
Why Do Flexi Hoses Burst?
Even though the outer braid looks tough, flexi hoses are one of the most common causes of household water damage. They account for 1/5 water damage claims.
Here’s why they can fail:
Aging: The rubber inside deteriorates over time.
Poor installation: Over-tightening, bending too sharply, or twisting can weaken the hose.
Corrosion: Especially around the metal connectors.
Water pressure: High pressure stresses the hose constantly.
Chemical exposure: Some cleaning chemicals can speed up rubber breakdown.
How to Prevent Flexi Hoses from Bursting
Replace every 10-15 Years
Even if they look fine, hoses should be replaced as part of regular home maintenance. Many manufacturers have warranty lasting 10-15 years. It is worthwhile replacing them before warranty expires.
Use High-Quality Hoses
Buy hoses that meet Australian Water Mark certification (or equivalent standards if you’re outside Australia). Look for reinforced hoses with better-quality fittings.
Install a Pressure Limiting Valve
If your home’s water pressure is too high, it can stress hoses. A pressure limiting valve (PLV) protects them and your entire plumbing system.
Inspect Regularly Check hoses at least once a year:
Look for rust, bulging, fraying, or leaks around connectors.
Replace immediately if you spot damage.
